SQL in Business World
Course Overview
This 16-hour course brings the essentials of how SQL skills are applied in business decision making among a variety of industries from a data analytics consultant viewpoint. The course provides not only the fundamentals and core knowledge of SQL programing, but also deep inside look into how data analysis using SQL helps the stakeholders understand the business from different perspectives, and eventually how data analysis using SQL could drive insights and decision making process. Using practical examples of actual retail business, this course will connect the theoretical, high-level concepts of data analysis with the real-world data analytics examples.
Each session or workshop has a duration of 2 hours.
Session 1 – Working in Database and How Database Works
• Overview of how the Database is commonly functioned and structured in a company
• What skills and qualifications are commonly values for data analytics roles from candidates will be covered in this session
• Common data analytics role interview questions will be briefly discussed
• Introduction on “big picture” of the role data analytics team plays and key stakeholders
• Understand on how real-world data analytics support business decisions
Session 2 – Analyzing Data from Single Tables with MySQL
• The “big 6” elements of a SQL select statement given below will be covered in this session:
o The Select statement
o The From statement
o The Where statement
o The Group By statement
o The Having statement
o The Order By statement
• Common business scenarios of when and how to use these statements will be discussed
• Examples of solving real world business problems using SQL statements will be provided
Session 3 – Analyzing Data Using the Case statements
• Introduction of Case and Logical Operator
• Deep Dive into case statements Logics and Syntax
• How to use Case Statements to flexibly generate complex metrics and KPIs
• Signal Table Query Case Study
Session 4 – Relational Database Fundamentals
• Database normalization, table relationships & cardinality, and relationship diagrams will be further discussed
• How to use joins for multi table querying:
o Inner Join
o Left Join
• Examples of how to use Joins to solve complex business problems will be covered
Session 5 – Analyzing Multiple Tables via MySQL JOINS
• Key MySQL Joins functions and statements below will be discussed:
o Right Join
o Left vs Inner vs Right
o Full Outer Join
o “Bridging” Unrelated Tables
o Multi Condition Joins
o Union Tables
• Multiple Tables Query Case Study will be covered in this session
Session 6 – Advanced SQL Analytics Techniques
• How to apply Sub Query on advanced analytics tasks with complex business logics
• How to improve data analytics efficiency using Window Function
Workshop 1 – Exercise: building an analytics project from scratch
• Apply the knowledge from the six sessions to build an analytics project from scratch
Workshop 2 – Exercise: apply different analytics methods to derive insights from data
• Introduce and apply different analytics methods for the data analytics projects
